Fear – Overcome Fear and Forge To Success

Overcome Fear, Forge To SuccessFear2

Fear can rule you. Fear is powerful and fear is real. To achieve your goals you must overcome fear.

I define fear as the gap between what you know you must do and the action of actually doing it. You know what you want out of life. You have had opportunity to learn what you must do for you to get what you want. BUT…. (play some spooky music in your head hahaha!)….. you are afraid to step out and do what needs to be done. Fear is the opposite of courage!

To show you why you must face up to and deal with your fears, let me show you what fear does:

  • It stifles your thinking. Your mind just shuts off and sees no possibilities around any situation.
  • Fear paralyzes you. You end up doing nothing.
  • Fear leads to lost opportunities due to procrastination. It takes you too long to make decisions to act on opportunities.
  • It causes you to do nothing for fear of failing.
  • You end up losing confidence in yourself and eventually can self destruct.

There are two positive outcomes that result once you teach yourself to overcome fear.

  1. When You Overcome Fear You Get Your Power Back

As long as you let fear rule you, you become a victim in your head. The victim mentality emanates from being afraid to take the bull by the horns for your own rescue. Always when you face a challenge, acknowledge that danger is real, but fear is a choice. YOU choose to be brave, stand and take action or walk away with your tail between your legs.

What are the dangers of taking action? Possible failure and the consequent loss of respect from friends and family. But you know what? That boils down to you worrying about what people will think should you fail as opposed to you being driven by the possibility of your success. Get back your power. Be driven by your vision to take action instead of cowering to the fear of being laughed at should you fail. “What if it works” must be the fuel in your mental engine.

Conquering your fears is the most powerful thing that you can do.

“The fear of becoming a ‘has-been’ keeps some people from becoming anything.” – Eric Hoffer

  1.   To Overcome Fear Empowers Others To Conquer Their Own Fears

Always remember that when you take action, people watch what you do. Now that should not scare you. It should inspire you to be your best. When you relentlessly pursue your dreams/goals and overcome fear until you succeed, it inspires the spectators in your life to follow in your footsteps. You show them what is possible and they get the oomph to take action themselves. Guess what? That makes you a leader. Leadership is not ordered or commanded. It is earned. You earn leadership if you conquer your fears.

If the general world populace does not inspire you to overcome fear and become a leader, if you are a parent, remember your children are watching you. Their first and strongest lessons at how to deal with adversity come from you. I rest my case!

“One who gains strength by overcoming obstacles possesses the only strength which can overcome adversity.” – Albert Schweitzer

So what is it that you want to do deep down in your heart? Is it to:

  • Fire your boss and live life on your terms?
  • Be a stay-at-home mom and raise your own children?
  • Be financially free to pursue your passion and fund the causes that matter to you?
  • ……………………………………………? Fill the gap.

There is action that you need to take for that dream to become a reality. What is stopping you from doing it? Are you letting fear make the decision for you?

Do what you fear the most and the death of fear will be certain.

I will leave you with quotes from three notable individuals who overcame fear and made a difference not only in their own lives but touched many other lives too.

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” – Nelson Mandela
“I know fear is an obstacle for some people, but it is an illusion to me. Failure always made me try harder next time.” – Michael Jordan

“He who overcomes fear will truly be free.” – Aristotle

Who Has Dominion Over You

ego busterThe first thing to do is obviously to define what dominion is. Dominion is to have control over, to domineer. It is a word that is found in the Bible because humans were given the right to have dominion. So we need to understand the kind of dominion that humans were given in order for it to be used properly.

Firstly let me make something clear from the onset. Humans were given dominion over animals and plants and not over other humans. Animals do not have the power to reason. They mainly operate using natural instinct. That is why humans who have the power to reason and rationalize were given the right to rule over the animals and make decisions on their behalf.

When it comes to humans however, no matter how old or young or what sex an individual is, no one has the right to domineer over the other. We can only reason with each other and none is compelled to accept the other person’s opinion.

To progress and meet your aspirations as an individual, you should never allow another person to have dominion over you. Only God should have dominion over you because He is all knowing and He created you and understands you more that you will even ever understand yourself.

With the above statement am I saying that other people cannot play a role in influencing your life for success. Definitely not. There is plenty of room for others to be a part of your success through their influence. Influence is different from dominion.

Influence shows you how success is achieved by the person being a good example of what you aspire to achieve. Dominion on the other hand dictates to you the path and demands that you walk in it. Humans being the imperfect creatures that they are do not have the prerogative to dictate anything to each other. They can only guide, give advice and lead by example as proof that their philosophy works.

Usually dictators want others to do what they prescribe while they themselves do not do or live by that prescription. Influencers (another name for leaders) live what they preach. Their credibility stems from that trait of saying what they do, and doing what they say.

So the question comes back again. Who are you allowing to have dominion over you? When you aspire to do things that you have never been done before or which most people have never done before such as becoming an entrepreneur who are you allowing to dictate to you what can or cannot be done.

There are three classes of dictators that I have met in my career as an entrepreneur.

1. The I Cannot Do It so Neither Can You Group
These people look at what you are getting started with, they look at themselves and declare to themselves that it is impossible to achieve success. Instead of keeping their opinions to themselves, they want you to buy their story. They will do all in their power to remind you at every turn that you are crazy and that you will fail. What drives them is their own fear and they want you to be just as fearful and quit what you have started.

2. The Do Not Disrupt the Status Quo Group
This group of dictators is very interesting. They are afraid that you are going to succeed and then expose them for what they are, fearful people (I reserved the use of the C word here ). By breaking away and becoming a successful entrepreneur, your success becomes a reprimand to them for not breaking out as well. In a pretext to protect you from yourself, they look up every failure case in entrepreneurship or whatever new venture you are embarking on that they can find in real life or from the internet and they will spread it before you as proof. The objective is to paralyze you with fear until you quit.

3. The Haters
These are people who just do not wish you any good. They spend most of their energy devising and carrying out PHD (Pull Him/Her Down) missions. They will secretly and openly plot your downfall. They thrive on making other people feel inferior through negative talk and gossip. They are just busy bodies who feel happy from popping other people’s balloons. They want the gloom that they spread to poison you into paralysis.

I felt my body tense up just writing about these people. I am sure you have met others who belong to other categories but the above three are the most common.

My advice to you is never allow the toxicity of negative talk and fear to have dominion over you. The last time I read my Good Book on how to make a living, it stated that we are to labor and do all our work. Nowhere did I see a prescription of what kind of work is to be done. The only admonition given in how we work is that there be no exploitation of man by man. Fairness and equity are to be the guiding principles that we live by.

It is an individual’s choice whether they earn their living working a job or being an entrepreneur. I am offended when a budding entrepreneur is told to stay where they are and do what has always been done.

Are there risks involved in entrepreneurship? Yes. Is it tough becoming a successful entrepreneur? Yes. But the bottom line is: they must leave you be. You should be free to go through the growth process of becoming a successful entrepreneur in order to become one.

So, since you clearly have the entrepreneurial bug (you would not be reading this if you did not), brace yourself up for the opposing current. Be upright and true in all your dealings. Help others along the way. Work with Godliness. Take good advice from your mentors and never, ever let anyone have dominion over you.

Overcome Your Fears To Have Peak Life Experiences

Flying back home yesterday from a fantastic company training event I specifically asked for a window seat at check in. I make it a point to get a window seat whenever I fly. I enjoy the window seat as I get to watch all the action taking place on the ground below; The changes of scenery as you fly over different landscapes is quite fascinating and make for an interesting journey.

The one disadvantage for me when flying are my fear of take off and landing. I read somewhere that the majority of aeroplane accidents hapenned during taken off and landing. Now that was long before I took my first flight and that created in me a dread for flight take off and landing. So on every flight I had ever taken I’d close my eyes and pray forsafety until I’d hear the captains or cabin attendant’s voice over the intercom signaling that the ascending or descending process was over.

On this last flight I decided to face my fear for the first time. My eyes were wide open and I watcheed through the window for the first time as the plane took off and landed. Needless to say I broke into a sweat and held on to my seat with each altitude changing move the huge machine made. What an experience! To see for the first time in my flying experience that big machine leave the ground and increase altitude was amazing. To see the sheer speed that the plane attains as it builds up to defy gravity was awesome. The adrenalin rush alone was worth it.

Now if you have had your eyes open at every flight take off and landing you are probably wondering what my fuss is all about. Believe me it was a big deal for me.

Why am I sharing all this with you? In life there are activities and opportunities that you may have let pass by or are letting pass by because you are afraid. In most cases your fear is based on valid statistical facts like the stats regarding most aircraft accidents hapenning at take off and landing.

Imagine if I had internalized that fact to a point where I refused to fly just in case the plane crushed. Yet for many who will read this article, that is how you live your life. You have not only read but you have seen people take on opportunity only for them to fail and be laughed at. Scientific studies are abound on how dismal the chances of failure of business ventures are. Based on those facts, you decide to not even try. How many new cities and countries will I have seen if I had followed my fear and refused to fly.

My experience yesterday made me realize that making the decision to fly was good but I was denying myself a peak experience by closing my eyes during the most exciting part of the flight. When I decided that with or without opening my eyes an accident could or could not happen, I took the plunge and had my first conscious take off and landing and I look forward to many more to come. Until I took the action, I also told myself to trust the pilot’s skills and the machine’s ability to do what it was designed to do.

So to overcome your fear of anything:
– anticipate the positive outcome of taking the plunge. Let the possible positice result be the driving force.
– trust the systems that are there to make it possible for you to succeed.
– believe that God is in control and wants the best for you

So here’s to many more eyes-wide-open take offs and landings for me from numerous cities around the world.

Make your life count by facing your fears and bringing back the excitement. It’s worth it!
