Action Demonstrates Serious Intent About Your Goals

Action speaks louder than words.

I could just write that sentence and be done with what it takes to demonstrate how serious you are about your goals. It all boils down to the level and quality of action you take. But so that you truly understand what you have to do I am going to be more verbose.

Execute Your Plan

Visualization, writing down your goals, putting your plans on paper are all good, but they are no good if you do not take action. The power and effectiveness of any dream or plan lies in taking action. You are married today (if you are) because you took action beyond your being attracted to your spouse. If you are a man, you asked for the date and then you showed up to pick her up. If you are a woman, you took the time to dress well for the date and continued beyond, so that you remained attractive to your guy. You both showed that you were serious about each other.

Your business dreams are serious about you because they came to you. You must liken your business to a romance. No matter how attractive your goals are, if you do not take the initiative to make them happen, they will remain just as dreams. In fact, they will turn into nightmares. Take massive action on your goals. Take courageous action and rise to meet any mental, physical and emotional demands that the goals make on you.

Rise Above Your Fear

Courage is not the absence of fear. It is feeling the fear and doing the thing anyway. Decide that what you want is bigger and far more important than the fear that tries to prevent you from achieving it. Face fear head on, even if it makes you feel nauseous. One sure way of countering fear of taking action is to visualize what the future is going to be like if you do achieve your goals. Keep that vision ever before you and let it pull you towards your destiny.

Set Boundaries

There are people and circumstances that are dream stealers. People’s attitudes and the words they say can either lift you up or pull you down. Circumstances can also be either morale booster or energy drainers. If you are stuck with negative people and circumstances because it is beyond your control to alter that, set mental boundaries to never give them power over you. It takes a lot of focus and will power to do that. Just decide that people’s opinions are theirs and they do not change what you want to become. Do not allow negative circumstances to pull you down. Win the battle in your mind and you will win it in the physical.

If it is up to you to do it, remove yourself from toxic company. That fuels your action taking positively. Say No when people ask you to waste your time doing things that do not feed into your goals. Set boundaries that allow you to maximize the usage of your time, skills and talents. Be laser focused for a season, knowing that once you achieve your goals, there will be plenty of time to do what you want, with whom you want.

Be Reliable to Yourself and Others

Be a person of your word. Make commitments and honour them, even if it’s painful or uncomfortable to do so. Do not be easily taken off course. Cultivate a strong and undefeatable spirit that actively overrides the default mode of giving up when the going gets tough. Your honour and reputation is at stake with every commitment and word that you say. Guard them jealously because once reputation is lost, it is hard to rebuild.

Target Setting And Action Taking For A Fabulous 2015

On TargetSo like I shared with you in yesterday’s post, I spent the last week of December 2014 target setting and planning for the coming year, 2015. I laid out a road map of the goals that I want to achieve and the actions that I must take in order to achieve them.

Today I will share with you the how of that planning and execution process. You probably have heard these six principles of goal setting, have effectively applied them at work but not in your life.

It is time that you applied them with the same intensity in your life. Rather than just make resolutions for the year that you will not keep, it is time you took time to map out a strategic plan for your life and implemented it.

So if you have planned for the office and have not yet planned for YOURSELF, use the week end to develop your personal 2015 strategic plan.

These are the six steps that you MUST follow in order to develop a life strategy that will take you from where you are to where you know you deserve to be. Rather than just wish for success, if you do ALL six of these steps, you will finally get to realize the success.

Step 1: Be Specific

For example do not say, I want to make more money in 2015. Specify a clear target figure. Based on your financial projections, name a figure that you are aiming to earn. Saying I must make an extra $5,000/month is more specific. It is a quantifiable target or goal. So, no general statements but specific measurable targets to reach.

Step 2: State a Time Frame To Achieve the Target By

Specifying a date by which to achieve the set goal will give you urgency to get down to doing what is required. If there is no time line, the tendency is to just drift and hope for the best. In our income target example, saying I want to make an extra $5,000/month by 30 April 2015 will get you off your bottom to do the work as time waits for nobody.

Step 3: Write Your Target Down

Targets kept in the head are rarely met. Writing your target down makes it important. Write it where you can view it daily. Take advantage of technology. Write your goals on index cards and then take a picture of each and keep them in a 2015 Goals Folder in your smart phone or tablet. At specific times of the day, read your goals out loud. What you confess with your mouth comes to pass and it keeps it at the front of your mind. Schedule a weekly or fortnightly review to check how on or off track you are and make the necessary adjustments.

Step 4: Devise A Plan of Action

Achievement is a result of actually doing a set of activities leading towards your goal. Talk to anyone and they have big dreams. Why have they not attained them? Because they are not prepared to do what it takes. To come up with an effective Action plan ask yourself:

  • Is what I am currently doing going to get me to my goal?
  • Do I need to find and learn a new way of doing things to reach my goal? (Back to our income example: If your current income generating activities cannot bring in an additional $5,000 by 30 April 2015, then you need to look for an additional income stream activity to do, learn the skills associated with it and get started. This could take the form of a side business or new investment ventures)
  • What specific actions must I take to reach my goal? Figure out the HOW and do it.

Step 5: Decide the Price You are Willing To Pay

Something for something, nothing for nothing is what it boils down to. Good things do not come easy. There is a price to be paid. Are you willing to pay the price to get what you want, or even need. You WILL have to give up certain habits and adopt new ones to reach your goal. You may have to give up watching TV and/or sports, give up drinking, get out of bed earlier and go to sleep later. Whatever you need to do, only you can figure it out. Once figured out, DECIDE to do it!!

Step 6: Think About Your Goal Daily

Keep your goal before you every day. It is the fuel you need for the engine of action to keep high energy. Having your goal written in the present can help make it real for you. For our example. Rather than writing it down the traditional way in which we stated it earlier do this: I am able to buy a new car because I am earning an extra $5,000/month by 30 April 2015. This way of writing your goal pumps adrenalin into your system when you read it. Also more than just the goal, it marries it to the outcome that attaining it will result in.

In Conclusion

The above six steps are mandatory. Skip one of them and you are sentencing yourself to not meeting your targets and never realizing your dreams for yet another year.

  • Is it going to take time to see results? YES it is. But time will move anyway whether or not you take action. Might as well spend it moving towards your goal.
  • Is it going to be easy? NO! You will face challenges. You just have to have enough stubborn resolve to push through the challenges.
  • Is it going to be worth it? YES, YES, YES. Close your eyes and imagine yourself sitting behind the wheel in your new car, smell the new leather, and your kids excitedly asking where you are taking them for ice cream or pizza. Is that scene worth it? Then get off your butt and resolutely take action to make it a reality.

Keep focused, persistent and determined. Great things are possible to the believing action taker.

Have a fabulous 2015!

Simple Steps Leading to a Successful You Part 1

Success is Simple if You Are Willing to Work on Yourself

If you ask many people you will find that invariably all want to be successful. Yet many do not achieve success because they are in either of two extremes in their mindset: Striving for success or aimlessly drifting. You need to realize what you should and should not do for you to get to where you are aiming at.

1.     Do Not Strive for Success – Attract Success

The pursuit of success leads to failure. Have you ever heard people who say I will get it at ‘whatever cost’? Such a mindset is an indication of someone who has not taken stock of what is needed for them to get to their destination. Success is not free. It comes at a cost but the cost is not ‘any cost.’ It is a defined cost with distinct steps and processes that the aspiring person has to go through to get there. So what must you do to attain success without striving for it?

How to attract Success

This happens only when you become an attractive person. Success can never be achieved in isolation. For one to be successful, you need people to contribute to your getting to where you want to go. A person who strives for success will invariably trample all over relationships to get success at ‘any cost’. They may get to the top and think that they have succeeded only for them to realize how empty and hollow it is to be alone up there.

To be successful, you need to attract people. To attract people you must be attractive. When you become more than what you are, you become an attractive person so that you attract the right people who will work with you to achieve.

2.     Have Clearly Defined Goals

goal gapSuccess cannot be achieved through hit and run tactics. Define where you are now and where you want to go. What it means is that you need to realize the magnitude of the gap between your now and the future that you want. What is the more that you are aspiring for? Realize that to get more you must be more than what you are right now.

Once you understand the quantum that you have to jump to achieve your goals, you will be able to clearly state what needs to be done to cover that gap. Your actions cease to be random shots from the hip, hoping to hit the target. They become concise steps.

3.     Seek For Knowledge as for Hidden Treasure

hidden treasureThe Bible says ‘Seek and you shall find.’ It also says ‘seek for wisdom and knowledge as for hidden treasure.’ It is only those who seek or search who find. Do you have goals that you aim to attain? Have you taken stock of the skills that you need to have to achieve those goals?

Identify the skill gap that stands between you and achieving your goals. Search for the sources of knowledge that will cover that skill gap. Get them and use them. Work on yourself and you will rise above your circumstances and start to be the master of your destiny.

4.     Some Common Areas of Challenge

(a)    Success at Parenting

To succeed as a parent, you must learn how to be a good parent and change to become that. Working harder at your parenting will cause you to clash with you children as you define your success on their behavior. Working harder on yourself will teach you how to deal with each child and parenting situation maturely.

(b)   Success in Marriage

To have a happy marriage you must learn what it takes to have a good marriage and become that. Working harder at your marriage will create tension between you and your spouse, while working on your skills as a marriage partner will endear you to your spouse.

(c)    Success in Your career

To be promoted at work, you must learn the relevant skills that will take you to the next level. Working harder at your current job will earn you a living. You will be stuck on your current income, working so many hours that you will have no time to spend with your family and friends. Working on yourself, building your skill set will cause you to outgrow your current job, move on to that higher level where you can take control of your time and thus your life.

To sum it all up: The key word here is LEARN! Work harder on yourself than at what you want to have. Understand your short comings, identify and develop the skills you never had before to achieve goals for you and your loved ones. Focus on the one you can change: YOU.
