Peace At Home For Your Home Business

PeaceCan there truly be peace at home for a budding home business owner?

Today I am going to share with you some of the mistakes that I made when I started my home business that contributed to my slow and erratic achievement rates. Pay very close attention because this will either make you or break you as a home business owner. This advice applies to both the full-time and part-time home business person.

  1. For Peace, Have that Frank Conversation

Do not be the kind of person who expects your family to be mind readers. For there to be peace at home, there are expectations and routines that go with being a family man/woman. Your children will expect you to play with them or attend their school activities. This becomes a big issue if you are doing your business full time. The kids might not understand why if you are at home all the time, you say you cannot give them the time that they believe they deserve.

When I first started working for myself from home, I was still in full-time employment. That meant that I had to do my home business activities after work in the evenings. I was already feeling guilty about not being there during the day as a mom. Imagine my dilemma when I now had to block out evenings as well. I found myself falling into the trap of wanting to do my business related work and being there for everything that the family did. I became a nervous wreck with very little to show on either front.

Things started taking shape when I realized that I could only focus and be effective on one thing at a time during my after-work time. So I clearly identified what my money producing activities were for my business; that was making those phone calls, doing the home meetings, talking to prospects and converting them to customers. On the home front I identified the stuff that I could delegate and that which I absolutely had to do. For example I had to eat and we could all eat together. Meal Times are a useful time to engage with the family and stay involved to keep that peace at home (more about that a few lines down this article).

Having identified my critical business tasks, I determined how much time I was going to put into my business and I called a family meeting. At the meeting I explained how I was all in to my business and really wanted it to work so that I could release more time in the future to spend with them. I let them know what it was going to entail and asked for their patience and our mutual sacrifice while I was at it. I promised to give it my all. I had quite a number of false starts until I realized that my success was really up to me and nobody else.

The trouble with most home based entrepreneurs is that after having that talk, you slacken and do not do what is important. It creates contempt, mistrust and disunity in the family and they develop a negative outlook to your business. Under-promise and over-deliver. They will support you to the top of your home business career.

  1. Have a Laser Focus During Business Time

Once you have laid it out there, be a man/woman on a mission. Do not allow distractions around the house to slacken you and make you ineffective. During the hours that you have determined to be your home business hours, be laser focused. No social media except if it is feeding into your goals, no chit chat when making phone calls, no up and down trips to the kitchen for snacks, no endless tidying up of your desk and sharpening the pencil. Get on with it. I wish I could have a better way to tell you the importance of being laser focused. Just be!

  1. Peace Comes From Giving The Family Your Presence

Meal times, family prayer times, or whatever time you have set aside for family activities, be there. Be totally present. Do not be at family meals with your phone by your side so you can answer text messages or comment on social media. Have the discipline to leave the phone and laptop in your office (I am assuming that you have a properly designated work area). You will achieve more buy-in and family support by strictly observing this. Nothing will irritate your wife, men :), than you not paying attention during the 30 minutes that you promised to be hers and the children’s time. Moms, kids if not given due attention become irritable and steal your peace!

So it’s out there now. Take it to heart. Apply it. You will see the results. One thing that I learned from applying these three principles was that contrary to popular belief, I do not need a lot of time to run a successful home business. I need a lot of doing the right things in the time that I carve out for my business instead.

Making Profits Is What Will Feed Your Family

There are many individuals who have survived economic upheavals in their countries. For example Zimbabwe, my home country went through a massive economic meltdown in 2007/2008 financial years. A lot of companies and individuals were totally ruined economically such that many corporate organizations shut down and some individuals never recovered.

Companies are still scaling down or shutting down today and individuals are losing their livelihoods through job losses. In harsh economic environments like these, is it possible for individuals to restore or improve their liquidity sustainably?

With some outside the box thinking and action, individuals have the capacity to create their own micro-economies through home businesses. The viability of these home businesses obviously depends on whether or not they are profitable.

Whatever field you set up a home business in or whatever model you follow in running the business, the most important factor to consider is whether your bottom line is net positive. If your business is not making net profits then eventually it is going to collapse. It is just a matter of time.

The tips that I am sharing with you on this post must be integrated into your home business. they will not only help your business to survive but to become profitable as well.

1. Know Why You Are In Business
Write down your reason why you are in business. What are your expectations from the business? There are two levels at which the reason why must be defined. Define your personal why and the why of the business itself. Go on to establish the degree to which the two expectations are mutually compatible.

Your plans and all the activities that take place in your business operations must feed into fulfilling your two WHYs. Review you plans regularly to check if you are still on track to accomplishing your reasons for being in business. Making Profits must be a major component of that plan for you the business owner and for the business entity.

2. Pride or Feeding the Family
In the initial stages of any business, there will not be visible profitability. However the difference between a business that will fold and a business that will survive to flourish beyond those initial years is based on the profit plan. Many business plans focus on a marketing plan that is centered on increasing sales and hoping that that will automatically lead to profit.

Reality check. High turnover does not necessarily translate to making profits until a detailed income expenditure analysis is done to determine whether the costing of a product or service is resulting in net profit. Increased sales feed your pride. It is only increased profits that feed your family.

3. Making Profits Creates Re-investment Capacity
A combination of positive cash flow and making profits will expand your business’s ability to grow through re-investment. A lack of profit results in weak cash flow. A weak cash flow translates to low working capital. If a business is to survive and expand, its capital base must be strong and that strength can only be obtained in two ways: profit or external investors/loans. In these stringent economic times, there is very little chance of accessing external funds. It is imperative to build your own life blood by having a solid profit plan.

4. Making Profits Give Options
The more options your business has, the more robust it become. Options or choices are freedom. A lack of profits in your business makes you dependent on others. A business that is generating profits allows for visionary planning and the development of a strong future direction.

A comprehensive profit plan must constitute part of your marketing plan if your business is to be viable and sustainable. Remember that surviving one economic melt-down is no guarantee that you will survive the next one. Create a Plan B as an individual. Starting a profitable home business is one sure way of doing that.

Get More Productivity In Your Home Business Part 2

Time FreedomOn yesterday’s post we shared the first five of ten focal areas to master in order to maximize the usage of time in your home business and create the time freedom that you desire.

Today we give you the remaining five. If you make these 10 principles a part of your daily planning, you are bound to see the positive effects both in the quality of your life and your bank balance.

6. Make Deadlines Firm But Adequate
due dateSet deadlines for yourself as a home business owner. The absence of a deadline eliminates the motivation to do a task and places the task at the bottom of the pile of things to do. Be dependable to your customers and business partners by meeting agreed deadlines. Set deadlines for a specific date and time as opposed to a time period. For example “due on June 18 by 12:00 noon” is better than “in about two weeks time”. Make your deadlines adequate, not too tight. Build in a few extra days for the unexpected delays, last minute changes and a crisis in the home or on another project.

7. Protect and Value Your Time
Productive people do not waste time. They guard their time jealously. Get right to the point when talking to people. You risk coming off as abrupt to some people but understand that you cannot afford to everyone all the time they want. Choose who you spend time with. Be decisive. Say what needs to be said, do what needs to be done and move on.Value Your Time

Know the value of your hourly rate, commit it to memory and use it to weigh the effort required for specific activities and the return they will produce against the cost of your time. Weigh your options and always use your time wisely.

8. Stay Focused
One of the habits of successful people is to apply themselves to the task at hand. Work until the task is done. Concentrate on one thing at a time. Avoid going in many different directions. Do not be a talker. Be an actor, a doer. Have a vision and focus your activities to achieve that vision.

9. Set A Production Goal
Steinway makes 800 pianos in its German plant every year. An individual who truly wants to be productive sets a production goal, meets it and keeps going until they can do no more. The renowned author Joe Lansdale says he never misses his goal of writing three pages a day, five days a week. When people are employees, they will pitch up for work whether they feel like it or not. It surprises me that when the same person starts a home business they start accommodating “not being in the mood or feeling like it.”

10. Enjoy What You Do
Love what you doA Scottish proverb says “Be happy while you are living; for you’re a long time dead.” When you enjoy your work it ceases to be work in the typical sense. It becomes your passion. The vocation that you choose must be something that you love to do.

You will not love every project equally of course, but try to balance “must-do” mandatory tasks with things that are more fun for you. Remember we are not talking about you doing a hobby but we are talking business. So train yourself to enjoy what you do by changing your attitude. Attitude can be a trap or it can be freedom. Take your pick. Keep interested in the career path that you have chosen of working from home. It is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.

Get More Productivity In Your Home Business Part 1

Schedule ClockWhen you become a home business owner managing your time becomes that much more important as you now are your own boss and the boundaries between work and personal life can be blurred.

Mastering the art of working faster to produce desired results will introduce efficiency into your home business routine and release more time for you to engage in leisure activities such as reading a favourite magazine, hiking, or play with your toddler.

Here are the first five of ten ideas that can increase your personal productivity and give you the time freedom that characterizes the lifestyle of a home business owner.

  1. Master Your Home Business PC

downloadYou do not have to be a technology geek for you to have a well equipped and organized PC. Use a modern PC with the latest software installed. At the very least have the latest version of Microsoft Office and broaden your software packages in accordance with the specialized work that you do.

Constantly upgrade your desktop to eliminate computer processes that slow downloads of files or web pages. The internet is an indispensable tool for a home business. Get the fastest internet access you can such as an ADSL connection.

  1. Do Not Be A Perfectionist

Be a careful worker who produces excellent work but do not be a perfectionist. Customers do not have the budget for perfection. This does not mean that you be negligent or give less than your best. It means once it is done to the best of your ability deliver the work to your client or customer. Create it, check it and let it go. There comes a point in the production cycle when extra effort is not worth it. If you aim for 100% perfection you will not be profitably productive. A consistent 90-98% quality range will maximize both customer satisfaction and return of investment.

  1. Be A Good Copy Cat

Copy CatMany an entrepreneur has brought ruin upon themselves by wanting to always be an innovator. Be creative but do not place yourself under the pressure of being the first one to ever do things. Do not reinvent the wheel when there is a blueprint that you can follow and still make your customers happy. Most successful home business solutions are just common sense packaged to meet a specific need. Your best is enough without the pressure of your work being different or better than what others have done before.

  1. Inject Variety Into Your Project Schedule

As the saying goes, variety is the spice of life. Arrange your daily home business schedule so you switch from one assignment to another at least once or twice each day. Keep your mind fresh and allow yourself to explore new areas, markets, industries and disciplines outside your area of expertise. About 70-90% of what you do at any time must be familiar tasks within your area of expertise, while 10-30% should be in areas, markets, industries and disciplines outside your current skill base. Allow room for imagination inside your work schedule.

  1. Work Only on Concrete Orders

Before proceeding with a project, make sure it has an existing buyer or customer. Do not waste time working on projects that you think customers might want. Obtain letters of agreement, contracts and purchase orders before proceeding with production. To create a new product line, be guided by results of a sound market survey, not what you think the market wants.

The Five Steps to Success as a Network Marketer

It is natural to want to succeed at everything that you start to do. Now that you are a network marketer, you want to win at it I am sure. Not everyone who does this business will succeed, but anyone who puts their mind to it and follows the below five steps can succeed.

  1. Keep Your Job & Manage Your Actions

I have heard many a network marketer bemoan that their day jobs are robbing them of time to grow their home businesses faster. I will caution you to hold your horses in that line of thinking. If you cannot make your home business work and start paying you well on a part-time basis, you are probably not going to make it work even if you became full time.

You see success as a network marketer is not dependent on the abundance of time. It does depend on how effectively and efficiently you make use of the time available doing the money making activities in your business. Focus on discipline and managing your after-work activities to build an income that equals or surpasses what you are making in your job before you quit.

  1. Take the Lead – Call Your Sponsor

You can only get into network marketing through word of mouth information from someone who shares the opportunity with you. That person is called your sponsor or upline. Show your hunger for success by not waiting for them to call you to find out what kind of help you need. Take the initiative and call them and let them know from the onset that you are willing to learn what you can from them. Ask them for names of their sponsors several levels up so that if you do not get the kind of support that you need from your direct sponsor, you can get it from others in the organisation.

The way that this industry is structured is such that your sponsor benefits from supporting you. Sponsors are looking for members who are willing to be mentored to success. Be the one.

Beware of the dependency syndrome and the blame game. With or without a supportive sponsor or helpful uplines, your success in the business is your responsibility. Things will be harder without the support but success is still possible.

  1. Be Coachable and Teachable

A good network marketing company and a good team leader will direct you to a business system to work with to grow your business. Once you have pronounced yourself a student of your sponsor on how to use the system successfully, do what they tell you to do. Do not re-invent the wheel. All the successful people that I know in this industry look for a mentor who has used the company system and has had the kind of success they want. Identify that person in your company and do as you are told and shown. Rebellion here or being a smart aleck will lead to unnecessary frustration on your part.

  1. Be The Leader That You Want

Strike a balance between adding new team members and mentoring your team. Do not breed orphans in your team who end up being just a number. Create the time to induct your new team members and let them know you are available to lead them by example in what to do to be successful. Without babysitting and molly coddling the reps on your team, train them on how to duplicate what you do daily to grow your business. Spend at least the first 30days with your new rep training them, supporting and holding their hand until they are confident to be on their own and do the same for their team. Build long term relationships with your team and success is certain.

  1. Operate a Business not a Hobby

Never forget that you are running a real business. The income that you will make will be subject to the tax laws of your country of operation. You will also be entitled to the same tax write-offs that other businesses have. Benefits come with responsibilities. Take the time to keep accurate business records. Engage someone to do your books on a regular basis. Consult those in the know about home business accounting.

I find that once you start your network marketing business with this mindset and approach, you are going to treat it as a real business with regards to the commitment and effort you will put in learning the required skills and taking the necessary action for success.
